Putting Payroll in the Spotlight
How I orchestrated a national, bilingual campaign that combined thought leadership, media, digital, events, and partner marketing to celebrate payroll professionals and generate more than $1 million USD in direct pipeline
Integrated Campaigns · Thought Leadership · Partner Marketing · Demand Generation
At a global HR technology company, I led the marketing strategy for National Payroll Week, an annual celebration organized by the National Payroll Institute to recognize the professionals who ensure employees across Canada are paid accurately, reliably, and on time.
In a highly competitive payroll technology market, the opportunity was bigger than promoting a product. We wanted to celebrate payroll professionals, demonstrate our understanding of their increasingly complex work, and create a meaningful campaign that would strengthen brand visibility and generate demand.
The result was an integrated national program that brought together thought leadership, executive media, digital marketing, regional events, social campaigns, and solution-focused follow-up.
Impact at a glance
More than $1 million USD in direct pipeline
25% increase in Canadian website traffic during National Payroll Week
Sponsored editorial and advertising reached more than 3 million subscribers
National visibility across digital, print, social, web, and in-person channels
New leads and opportunities generated for the company’s payroll solution
Evergreen content created for ongoing nurture programs
The Case
Payroll is one of the few essential functions every employer shares. Organizations must pay their people accurately, consistently, and on time.
While that may sound straightforward, payroll is often highly complex. Payroll professionals must navigate changing regulations, tax requirements, workforce structures, compliance risks, technology, and growing expectations from both employees and the business.
The technology market serving these teams is equally crowded. National Payroll Week offered an important opportunity to rise above typical vendor messaging, demonstrate a genuine understanding of payroll professionals, and associate our brand with the expertise, recognition, and innovation shaping their work.
The strategy
I designed the campaign as a connected national experience rather than a collection of unrelated tactics.
Each element served a different role in the customer journey:
Thought leadership established relevance and credibility.
Executive media created broad brand visibility.
Targeted digital and social campaigns expanded national reach.
Regional events built in-person connections.
The campaign website brought every element together.
Follow-up content connected audience interest to relevant technology and solutions. In other words: generating new sales opportunities!
The creative approach focused on appreciation rather than product promotion. Our advertising celebrated the people behind payroll and recognized the essential role they play in every organization.
The campaign was delivered in both English and French, helping ensure the message felt inclusive and relevant across the Canadian market.
Setting the campaign in motion
A few weeks before National Payroll Week, we hosted an exclusive national webinar on artificial intelligence in payroll called How AI is Elevating the Way Canadians Get Paid.
The session was a major success and became the first anchor of the campaign. It gave the brand visibility among key Payroll and Finance audiences, introduced new contacts and opportunities into the funnel, and established a timely thought leadership theme that continued throughout National Payroll Week.
The webinar recording later became an on-demand resource within the campaign and a lasting asset for future nurture programs.
Building executive-level visibility
To reach senior business leaders, we sponsored a special National Payroll Week section in The Globe and Mail. The readership of this trusted national news publication aligned well with our target audience, including business executives and decision-makers.
The program included:
A full-page sponsored editorial focused on artificial intelligence in payroll
A full-page brand advertisement
A digital version of the editorial
Supporting display advertising
Together, the print and digital editions reached approximately 3 million subscribers, giving the company high-profile visibility alongside a timely business issue.
The editorial’s unmissable large format allowed us to offer substance and insight, while the accompanying eye-catching advertisement strengthened brand recognition.
Meeting the payroll professionals where they are
We sponsored several National Payroll Week events taking place in regions across the country.
These events gave the company a visible, in-person presence throughout the week and strengthened our association with the payroll community, the National Payroll Institute, and the professionals being celebrated.
Regional sponsorships complemented the broader media campaign by creating opportunities for local engagement, relationship building, and in-person conversations with payroll leaders – especially those tough-to-reach contacts!
Creating a central campaign destination
A dedicated page on the Canadian corporate website served as the destination for the campaign’s advertising and outreach.
The page included:
Messages recognizing and thanking Canada’s payroll community
The on-demand webinar on AI in Payroll and link to the Globe and Mail editorial feature
Invitations to regional National Payroll Week events
Registration for an upcoming payroll solution demonstration
A prize drawing for payroll professionals
Related company and product information
This created a connected journey from awareness and education to deeper engagement with the company’s payroll expertise and solutions.
Paid and organic social media, digital advertising, external partnerships, and earned media helped direct audiences to the page and amplify the campaign throughout the week. Our entire GTM organization joined the campaign by amplifying social media posts and sending payroll customers small tokens of appreciation.
Extending the value beyond the week
National Payroll Week created a concentrated period of visibility, but the campaign was designed to deliver value well beyond September.
The webinar recording, sponsored editorial, campaign content, and related resources became reusable assets for:
Lead nurture programs
Sales and BDR follow-up
Customer communications
Future payroll campaigns
Ongoing thought leadership
Product and solution education
This integration extended the life of the campaign and gave customer-facing teams credible, relevant content they could continue sharing with prospects and customers.
The Opportunity
The integrated campaign generated more than $1 million USD in direct pipeline and created a wave of new leads for the company’s payroll solution.
Canadian website traffic increased by 25% during National Payroll Week, demonstrating the campaign’s ability to turn broad awareness into measurable digital engagement.
The sponsored editorial and advertising reached more than 3 million Globe and Mail subscribers, while regional events, digital advertising, social media, and industry partnerships extended the campaign across the country.
The program also produced lasting content that continued supporting nurture, Sales outreach, and payroll solution marketing after the week had ended.
Most importantly, the campaign elevated the brand without relying on traditional product-first messaging. By celebrating payroll professionals, addressing the issues shaping their work, and providing natural pathways to relevant solutions, we created both audience value and measurable business impact. National Payroll Week also became an annual integrated campaign on our calendar!
The Results
A timely thought leadership anchor + genuine audience appreciation + national media reach + bilingual digital execution + regional presence + connected solution follow-up
