Strategic Move 05 · Content Strategy
Custom Content, Perfectly Choreographed
How I brought executive insights, customer voices, and original research together in one high-impact editorial experience
Content Strategy · Thought Leadership · Partner Marketing · Integrated Campaigns
At a global technology company, I led the development of a custom magazine created in partnership with an established media and publishing organization.
Available in both print and digital formats, the publication was designed to capture the attention of HR leaders and C-level executives with timely workforce insights, credible perspectives, customer proof, and practical advice.
Rather than producing another short-lived campaign asset, we created a high-quality publication that could earn a place on executive desks, travel to major conferences, support Sales conversations, and continue generating value online.
Impact at a glance
Influenced dozens of deals over more than three quarters of the fiscal year
Turned one premium publication into an always-on content engine across print, digital, email, events, partner channels, and Sales outreach
Drove high-intent conference engagement, with attendees bringing the publication to the booth to meet contributors and discuss our solutions
Equipped GTM teams with a credible, high-value asset that strengthened customer and prospect conversations
Recognized by the publishing partner as a gold-standard custom advertorial and showcased to other advertisers
The Case
Our target market was already surrounded by content.
HR leaders and executives received a constant stream of emails, ads, reports, webinars, and product messages. To earn their attention, we needed to create something that felt more substantial, useful, and memorable.
The opportunity was to develop a custom publication that combined the editorial value of a business magazine with the strategic objectives of a marketing campaign, giving us 100% share-of-voice from cover to cover.
It needed to:
Demonstrate our understanding of timely workforce issues
Showcase executive and customer perspectives
Provide practical value to executives and people leaders
Strengthen awareness of our brand and solutions
Support conversations across Marketing, Sales, and industry events
The strategy
I partnered with a media company we already advertised with throughout the year and used its publishing expertise, audience relationships, production capabilities, and distribution network to create a custom magazine.
The editorial strategy balanced thought leadership, practical guidance, customer credibility, executive perspectives, and selective brand messaging.
The publication included four complementary content streams:
Executive perspective
A welcome message and CEO spotlight
An interview-style feature sharing lessons from an enterprise CHRO
An executive roundtable examining major workforce priorities
Customer and brand proof
A customer story featuring a participant in our Customer Advocacy program
A related customer advertisement
Two full-page brand and product advertisements
Research and informed debate
Findings from an online survey exploring innovation
A head-to-head feature presenting opposing viewpoints on a timely workplace issue
Tips from a tech analyst and research firm on what to look for when buying new SaaS technologies
Practical workforce guidance
A Legal Corner covering relevant compliance topics for HR and people leaders
Advice on employee wellness, mental health, and psychological safety
Best practices for workplace inclusion and accommodation
The result was a publication with enough variety to appeal to senior executives, HR and people leaders, legal and compliance professionals, and employee experience teams, while maintaining a cohesive editorial voice. And, that editorial voice was quality material; exclusive articles, data, and insights not seen anywhere else, expertly crafted by our partner’s editorial team and edited and polished by us!
Extending reach through an established partner
One of the smartest aspects of the program was the distribution model.
Rather than building a print mailing operation from scratch, we aligned our project with the publishing partner’s existing editorial and production schedules. Our magazine was bundled with an upcoming edition of its regular publication and delivered to the full paid subscriber base.
This gave us access to a highly relevant audience without incurring additional mailing costs.
The publication was also distributed digitally through:
Email campaigns to customers and target prospects
The media partner’s online networks
Digital marketing and nurture programs
Sales outreach and follow-up
The print and digital versions supported one another. Print created a premium, tactile experience, while digital extended reach, accessibility, measurement, and longevity.
Why print still mattered
Print may no longer be the default, but that was precisely part of its appeal.
The publication looked and felt substantial. It was visually polished, professionally produced, and engaging enough to stand out from the stack of ordinary promotional materials.
It offered executives a welcome break from another screen and had the physical presence to remain visible on desks, in meeting rooms, and in reception areas.
Anything we developed in print was also supported extensively through digital channels, but the tactile format gave the campaign an additional layer of distinction and staying power.
Bringing the publication to life at events
The magazine became an important part of our presence at priority industry conferences.
Copies were:
Delivered to the hotel rooms of registered attendees
Included in conference bags
Displayed at our exhibit booth
Supported by a QR code for attendees who preferred the digital edition
We also connected the editorial strategy directly to the conference program.
One of our subject-matter experts contributed to an article in the publication and presented on the same topic at the event. This created a strong connection between the content attendees had received, the expertise demonstrated on stage, and the conversations available at our booth.
Conference attendees arrived holding the publication and wanting to meet the speaker, discuss the topic, and learn more about the company and its solutions.
The content did not simply support the event. It helped drive engagement within it.
Giving Sales something worth sharing
Sales representatives were proud to bring copies into meetings with customers and prospects.
That mattered.
The magazine gave them something more valuable than a product brochure. It offered informed perspectives, customer voices, practical guidance, and relevant workforce insights, while still creating natural opportunities to discuss the company’s expertise and solutions.
It became both a conversation starter and a credibility builder.
The Opportunity
The publication successfully connected editorial quality with commercial purpose.
Through the publishing partner’s established distribution channels, it reached the full paid subscriber audience without requiring additional mailing investment. Digital distribution extended its reach to customers, prospects, and online audiences.
At conferences, the combination of hotel-room delivery, attendee bag placement, booth availability, and aligned speaking content generated visible engagement. Attendees brought the publication to the booth and used it as the starting point for conversations with our team and subject-matter experts. Yes, they came to us!
Breaking up the full publication into shorter, easily digestible content pieces, we established an “always on” targeted digital campaign that ran in the months following the magazine launch.
Sales representatives continued using copies in customer and prospect meetings, extending the publication’s value beyond the original campaign.
Our customers loved seeing one of their peers featured in the publication and some began reaching out to her for advice and expertise.
The publishing partner was equally impressed and showcased our project to other advertisers as an example of gold-standard custom advertorial content.
Most importantly, the program showed that thoughtfully produced content could still command attention when it was relevant, visually compelling, strategically distributed, and fully integrated with online marketing, events, thought leadership, and Sales. In all, this content program spanned more than three quarters of the fiscal year and influenced dozens of deals.
The Results
